Publish, Close, and Mark an Exam
Publish a Draft exam after confirmation, enforce the exam window and PIN rules, then review and award student submissions.
For School administrators, Teachers. Updated 2026-08-10.
Overview
A Draft exam must be published before students can see and sit it. Publishing requires confirmation and warns that once at least one student has submitted, the paper should not be updated. Students can only start a published exam during its configured start and end window and must pass the PIN check when the exam is locked.
Marking happens per submission in the Review tab, where submissions are shown with student details, score, status, submitted time, and optional feedback. Awarding a score also creates or updates the matching academic result record.
Before you start
- Schedule the exam and build its paper
- Publish the exam so students can access it
Steps
- Open Exams > Schedules
- Select Publish on a Draft exam and confirm the publish prompt
- After the exam window ends, select Close if the exam should no longer accept submissions
- Open Exams > Review, choose the exam, and review submissions by student name
- Enter or adjust a score and feedback per submission
- Select Award to save and record the result
Common problems
Students report they cannot see or start the exam
Confirm the exam is Published, the student belongs to the exam class or selected access list, the current time is within the start and end window, and any PIN entered is correct.
The paper cannot be updated after publication
Once at least one student has submitted, the paper should not be changed. The publish confirmation warns that paper updates are blocked after submissions exist.
The Review tab shows a submission but no student name
The review list now resolves student details from the user record; if only an identifier appears, confirm the student user still exists in the school.
