Sit a Published Exam (Student)
Students choose an active exam card, unlock with PIN when required, answer one question at a time with autosave, review answers, submit after confirmation, and view results.
For Students. Updated 2026-08-10.
Overview
Students see cards for published exams they can access, with status based on the exam's configured start and end date/time. Starting an exam opens exam mode in the URL so the current exam is preserved.
The exam interface shows one question at a time with Next and Previous controls, autosaves selected answers locally, tracks the remaining time, and provides a Review screen showing the question text and chosen answer.
Submission requires a confirmation prompt, is allowed only once, records the score, and then shows the result summary instead of allowing the student to start again.
Before you start
- The exam must be published
- The student must belong to the exam class or selected access list
- The current time must be within the exam start and end window
Steps
- Open Exams
- Review the exam cards and choose an exam that is active now
- If the exam is locked, enter the correct PIN to unlock it
- Answer questions one at a time using Next and Previous
- Selections are saved as the student moves through the exam
- Use the Review screen to see each question and the selected answer, then return to any question if needed
- Confirm the submit prompt to submit the exam
- Review the score/result after submission
Common problems
The card says Not started, Unavailable, or Ended
The exam can only be started inside its configured start and end date/time window. Ask the teacher to check the schedule.
The PIN is rejected
Locked exams require the exact 4 to 8 digit PIN set by the teacher.
The page was refreshed during the exam
The current exam state, current question, answers, and PIN session are persisted locally until submission, so the student can continue the same attempt after refresh.
The student already submitted but still sees the exam card
Submitted exams remain visible for review, but the action should be Review results instead of Start exam, and the student cannot submit a second attempt.
The timer reaches zero
The student is moved to review and should submit. The exam is governed by both the attempt timer and the configured availability window.
