Settings Visibility Requires a Settings Permission

The Settings sidebar link and each Settings tab only appear for users holding at least one matching settings permission.

For School administrators. Updated 2026-08-08.

Overview

The Settings sidebar link and the https://portal.myschoolgh.com/settings route are only reachable if the current user holds at least one settings-related permission.

Each tab inside Settings, School Profile, Billing, Sender ID, Roles, Permissions, Feature Visibility, Notifications, Receipts, and Localization, is independently gated by its own permission (for example the “view user permission” permission for Roles and the “edit user permission” permission for Permissions), so a user can be granted access to a subset of tabs without seeing the rest.

A user holding the “edit school settings” permission, or the ADMIN role's defaults, sees every tab. If a user has no matching permission at all, the Settings link disappears from the sidebar and the https://portal.myschoolgh.com/settings route shows a 'Settings unavailable' message instead of the page.

Steps

  1. Open Settings > Roles or Settings > Permissions (as an administrator) to check the target user's role default or overrides
  2. Grant at least one settings permission for the section they need, for example the “view school profile” permission for School Profile, the “view school billing” permission for Billing, the “edit school sms” permission for Sender ID, the “view user permission” permission for Roles, the “edit user permission” permission for Permissions, the “edit school feature” permission for Feature Visibility, the “edit school notification” permission for Notifications, the “edit school receipt” permission for Receipts, or the “view school localization” permission for Localization
  3. Save and ask the user to refresh

Common problems

The Settings link is missing from the sidebar entirely

The user holds none of the settings permissions (schoolProfile, schoolBilling, schoolSms, schoolNotification, schoolReceipt, schoolLocalization, schoolFeature, userPermission, or the “edit school settings” permission); grant at least one via a role or a permission override.

Settings opens but shows fewer tabs than expected

Each Settings tab is shown only if the user holds that tab's specific permission; a user with only the “view school billing” permission sees Billing but not School Profile, Roles, or Permissions.
