Select a Route When Adding or Editing a Bus

The bus form loads school routes into a searchable Route dropdown and saves the selected route association.

For School administrators, Accountants. Updated 2026-08-25.

Overview

When adding or editing a bus under Transport, Route is a searchable dropdown populated from the school's transport routes rather than a free-text ID field. Create the route first if it is missing, then choose it by name when saving the bus. The stored value remains the route's internal identifier, but users do not need to know or type that ID.

The route is optional unless the school's workflow requires every bus to be assigned. Student transport assignments separately choose a student, bus, route, and fare type; changing the bus route does not automatically rewrite every existing student assignment.

Before you start

Steps

  1. Open Transport > Routes and create the required route if it does not exist
  2. Open Transport > Buses
  3. Select Add bus or Edit on an existing bus
  4. Open the Route dropdown and search by route name
  5. Select the route, complete registration, capacity, driver, and status, then Save

Common problems

The Route dropdown is empty

Create a route under Transport > Routes and confirm it belongs to the same school, then reopen the bus form.

An existing bus shows no selected route

The bus may not have a route association yet, or its old route was removed. Select a current route and save.

Student assignments did not change after editing the bus route

Bus setup and student transport assignments are separate records; review Transport > Assignments when students must move to another route.
